In February of 1970 the Coast Guard used a helicopter to remove and reinstall the 431 pound lens assembly over new quartz-iodide lamps atop the Browns Point light tower. According to the press release issued by the Coast Guard at that time, “The new lamps have a life span of 165 days, compared with the 33 days for the lamps previously used. Although intensity of the new blubs is nearly the same as the older ones, it remains constant throughout the life of the bulb. The
