Howard T. Ball is shown here with his wife Lucy and three of their nine children. The government appointed Howard as the keeper of Eagle Island in 1898 upon the retirement of his father, Capt. John Ball, who kept the light for five years previously. Sadly, during his tenure as a light keeper at Eagle Island Lighthouse, two of his nine children, Agnes and Elmer, died as youngsters. Upon Balls’ death at the lighthouse in 1913, his wife Lucy served for seven weeks as the keeper until a new keeper arrived at the lighthouse.(Norma Ball Gray collection, Lighthouse Digest archives.)
