Wayne Wheeler, founder of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, is shown here in March of 1989 showing off the Bicentennial logo of the 200th Anniversary for National Lighthouse Day that would be celebrated on August 7, 1989, which was the only day and the only year that National Lighthouse Day was actually official.
Now that we are approaching the 225th Anniversary of the federalization of our nation’s lighthouses, it’s time to make August 7 of this year and every year thereafter as National Lighthouse Day. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo by Charles Hillinger, Los Angeles Times.)
