Addressing the crowd of over 1,200 people at the Cape Hatteras Descendants Homecoming and the Rededication of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on May 5, 2001, Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, called for the “Circle of Stones” to be included on the National Register of Historic Places or to request that the President of the United States issue an executive order and declare it a National Monument or National Memorial. He urged those in attendance to contact their elected officials and start a campaign to accomplish those goals. Although he was loudly applauded, no initiative was ever started.
