President Ronald Reagan, shown in this 1981 photograph holding a model of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that was presented to him by U.S. Senator Jessie Helms, was one of the early supporters of saving the historic lighthouse. He was appointed an Honorary Keeper of the Light by the “Save the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Committee,” an early group that did not want the lighthouse moved, but wanted it saved and protected at its original location, an idea that would have proved disastrous. However, if President Reagan were alive today, he would likely want the Circle of Stones saved for future generations.
