Some reports indicated that for a short time White Shoal Lighthouse was painted with a black band. However, this was more likely taken from the fact, as shown in this 1925 photo, that the government was testing various types of coating products to seal and preserve the ceramic tiles. Finally, Gunnite was applied to the entire tower to seal the tiles and the tower was painted all black and remained black until it was repainted, apparently, with a light gray color. Interestingly, photos of when White Shoal Lighthouse was painted all black have remained elusive. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
