Julia Tobey Brawn Way, the Saginaw River Rear Range Lights most famous lighthouse keeper. One of seven children, Julia was born in 1816 in Hallowell, Maine. In 1831 she married Peter Brawn who was appointed keeper of the lighthouse in 1864. Sometime shortly before or after that date, Peter became disabled and Julia assumed the duties of keeper. After Peter’s death in 1873, she continued as the keeper, assisted by her son, for the next seventeen years. In 1875 she married George Way and in 1890 she relinquished the post of keeper to her son Dewitt C. Brawn. Courtesy of the Bay County Historical Society.
