Photo Caption:
North Head Lighthouse from a 1907 photograph. You will notice that the drapes or curtains were drawn in the lantern to protect the 1st order Fresnel lens from the harmful rays of the sun. In the 1930s, the 1st order Fresnel lens was removed from the lantern and replaced with a much smaller 4th order Fresnel lens. The 1st order Fresnel lens is now on display at the nearby Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo.) Back to the edition of: Jul/Aug 2015
