Squaw Island Light, Mich. as she appears today. The lighthouse was abandoned by the government in 1928. When the station was closed the government left all the furniture, drapes etc. Over the years the stationed suffered severely from the elements and vandalism. Most of the furniture was either stolen or used by vandals as firewood. The lighthouse now has a caretaker and various other people who are watching out for the best interests of the station. Bernie Hellstrom and his family have spent the last few summers at the station cleaning up debris and stabilizing the station. A recent theft at the lighthouse resulted in quick action by the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Dept. and the return of stolen property to the light.
