Photo Caption:

This is the ladder that Richard Horne used to get himself out of the freezing water and back up and onto the deck of the Stannard Rock Lighthouse. However, this Coast Guard photo, which is shown here to help interpret the story, was taken in 1950 at the end of the shipping season when the last man left the light for the winter months and had to make his way cautiously down the ice-coated ladder to the waiting launch. In this 1950 photo the light at Stannard Rock had been extinguished for the season and would be activated again in the spring. At the time of this photo, it had taken several days and several attempts to get the men off the lighthouse for the season because of unfavorable weather and wave conditions.
