Left: John Victor Sandell started his lighthouse career at Grosse Point Lighthouse in Illinois where he served as a 2nd assistant keeper and then as the 1st assistant keeper from October 28, 1881 to August 24, 1883, when he was promoted, and under the administration of President Chester A. Arthur, he was transferred to Wind Point Lighthouse as the head keeper. One of the big newspaper stories that he read about in his first year at Wind Point Lighthouse was concerning the old west outlaw “Black Bart the Poet” who got away with his last stagecoach robbery but left an incriminating clue that eventually lead to his capture. John Sandell left the Lighthouse Service in 1891 after serving at Wind Point Lighthouse for seven years. (Lighthouse Digest archives, courtesy Friends of Wind Point Lighthouse.)
