The date of this old newspaper photo is unknown, but the caption says, “One of the few women lighthouse keepers, Mrs. Bertha Possell tends her lamps in the shadows of busy New York, on North Brothers Island in the East River. Her husband Albert is the regular keeper, but Bertha has taken over while he recuperates from a back injury. Back to the edition of: January 2001
