The mate on the right is Chief Bos’ns mate. Mr. Kearn remembers him only as “Froggy.” He kept some cows and sheep on Hog Island. His bull and other animals roamed at will, and Kearn recalls that the bull gave many of the Coasties on night patrol some close calls and scares. One day the bull was found shot to death. The man on the left is Bos’n Watson who had just returned from the South Pacific, having been at places like Guadalcanal. When Kearn volunteered for amphibious duty, he recalled that Watson said, “Stay right here, because if you don’t, someday you will cry.” Kearn said he was right, when upon returning to the United States after the war he got off the boat, knelt down and kissed the ground with tears in his eyes.
