Abbie Burgess is probably one of the most famous women lighthouse keepers in U.S. history. She was made famous in her own time at a young age for her acts of bravery at Maine’s Matinicus Rock Lighthouse and later served with her husband at Whitehead Light in Maine. Years after her death, her wish of having a lighthouse placed on her grave came true thanks to the efforts of New England historian and author Edward Rowe Snow. Several years ago her gravesite and that of other family members were restored through a joint effort of the Shore Village Lighthouse Museum in Rockland, Maine and the American Lighthouse Foundation.
