The Robben Island Lighthouse was first lit on January 1, 1865. Robben Island is most famous as the site of the prison where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner from 1964 to the end of the 1980's. The prison was closed in 1996 and is now a museum. Over 1000 people a day visit the cell where Mandela was held prisoner.
