Things are a lot different today at Fort Point Lighthouse from the days when James Rankin served there for 41 years. The first lighthouse built at Fort Point was an exact replica of the first Alcatraz Lighthouse. However, it never had a chance to be used having been torn down to make way for the three story fort. A new light was constructed which only served for a few years and it was also torn down. The third light, which is shown here, was built high atop the fort, which meant that the keeper had to climb 250 steps to tend the light. When the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, the lighthouse was no longer needed. Today it is part of the Fort Point National Historic Site
