This aerial view of Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse shows just how barren this isolated station is. While there have been reports that some keepers took soil out to the lighthouse to grow flowers and grass, Shirley says this was impossible. Waves that would often wash over the entire island would have made it impossible to grow anything there. She recalled that they used to throw out potato peels which would start to sprout but they always got washed away,
