Grants tomb from a vintage post card is the burial place of Ulysses S. Grant hero of the Union in the Civil War and twice elected president. In the mid 1900's the descendants of President Grant threatened to remove the remains of the president and other family members buried there because the historic monument was in such a state of disrepair. However in 1997 National Park Service spent $1.8 million to upgrade the memorial that draws 100,000 visitors per year. Although well over a million people showed up for original dedication in 1897, only thousands showed up for the rededication. The real shame is that not enough Americans visit the historic monument. If they did, they might better appreciate American history. Descendants of Grant said they hoped the National Park Service would now maintain and protect the historic site.
