The Morris Island Light, SC, from an 1893 photograph. The lighthouse once stood 200 yards inland. In 1880-81 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built two spur jetties in Charleston Harbor to protect the shoreline of Sullivan's Island. Because of this, Morris Island began to disappear. By 1938, all the buildings associated with the structure had washed away, but the light was still maintained by a keeper. By the 1950's, the base of the lighthouse was under 8 feet of water, and, finally, in 1962 the lighthouse was extinguished and the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse was turned on to takes its place. The lighthouse was sold at auction and has been abandoned ever since. A new group now hopes to save the old beacon.
