St. Johns River (Mayport) Light, Florida. For many years the United States Navy did not treat the lighthouse with any respect. In 1941, the U. S. Navy tore down the lightstation's Keepers Quarters, and other out buildings, thus destroying an important part of American lighthouse history. At the same time they covered up nearby eighteenth century cemetery. They had also planned to tear down the tower but were stopped by the cries of preservationists. In the 1950's they again wanted to destroy the lighthouse claiming it was a threat to aviation, again they were stopped by community activists. Finally, with all due credit to Captain Meserve's efforts (the man who now wants to move the lighthouse) the beacon received much needed maintenance work and the Navy placed the tower on the National Register of Historic Places.
