The massive base of the Navassa Island Lighthouse is shown here during construction in 1917. The lighthouse design was built to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes. Its base is 25 feet in diameter and its walls are six feet thick. However, without proper maintenance today, the cement will eventually deteriorate to a point when the lighthouse will be beyond saving. Back to the edition of: March 2008
