The keeper’s house was turned over to the State of Maine in the 1960’s and fell into a complete disrepair through the state’s blatant neglect. In May 2000 the American Lighthouse Foundation was granted a license for the tower only and the Friends of Perkins Island Lighthouse was formed as a chapter of ALF.
