Photo Caption:

Wisconsin's Plum Island Rear Range Lighthouse Station as it appeared in 1995. When the Coast Guard removed the old time lighthouse keepers, they boarded up the keeper's house and destroyed the landing ramp. Coast Guard personnel assigned to the lighthouse were given a room in the old life saving station that was then the Coast Guard Station. This was a much different way of life than the lighthouse service keepers lived. Eventually all the buildings on the island were abandoned by the Coast Guard, which still maintains an automated light in the tower. The wooden Plum Island Front Range Light, not shown, was demolished in 1964 and replaced with a skeletal tower, which still stands.
