The freshly painted Sambro Island Lighthouse tower stands watch over the old gas house that is more than a century old. It was once used to manufacture acetylene gas for the island’s light and possibly for its explosive fog signal. Although the building is a “recognized” heritage structure by the Canadian government, it receives no protection. Hurricane Juan undermined the structure in 2003 and it is highly unlikely that the structure will survive much longer without necessary repairs.
