Photo Caption:

This is the first time we’ve come across an old post card image of Fort Scammel Point Lighthouse in Portland Harbor, Maine. In the days before automatic lighthouses, we can only wonder whose responsibility it was to maintain this beacon. Perhaps it was a soldier from the fort or that duty was assigned to a lighthouse keeper from one of the nearby lighthouses. Maybe one of our readers has more information about this forgotten Maine beacon. If so, let’s hear from you by emailing us at Editor@LighthouseDigest.com or writing to us at P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630 or call us at 207-259-2121.
