He describes ancient Phoenician and Greek lighthouses, and then details development of lighthouses from seventeenth-century wood-fired beacons to today’s state of the art solar powered lights. Readers are treated to details of lighthouse technology and architecture, with focus on how lighthouses evolved over the centuries. Full-color cutaway diagrams show the inner workings of a lighthouse and describe how its lens system operates. Shown and described are lighthouses from all over the world, including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the North Carolina Coast which was moved more than a half a mile to avoid destruction from coastal erosion. The book includes more than 300 beautiful color photographs, watercolor renditions and sketches. Book is 9” x 13”, hard cover, (with dust jacket) with 192 pages.
