The Shoal Point Lighthouse on New York’s Fourth Lake was built in the late 1800s and was originally lit by a kerosene lamp. This little gem sits at the end of Cold Spring Camp Road. In 1918, New York City developer and property owner Otto Eidlitz ran an electric line to the light. The lighthouse fell into disrepair over the years, but the new owners have worked to repair and relight this beautiful little tower.
On Saturday, July 7, 2001, a flotilla of boats celebrated the dedication of the restored Shoal Point Lighthouse. After securing a 99-year lease and funds to rebuild the seawall on the shoreline from property owner Helen Severinghouse, the Fourth Lake Property Owners’ Association led efforts to restore the lighthouse. Funds were provided by friends of the lighthouse and the State of New York, and work was completed by local contractor Pete Bishop.
Now fully automated with an electric eye that starts a rotating airport landing beacon at dusk, the light will protect boaters and delight tourists.
