During an American Lighthouse Coordinating Committee session of the Sixth Maritime Heritage Conference recently held in Wilmington, NC a Distinguished Service Award was presented to Francis Ross Holland, Jr. by Donald J. Terras (right) of the ALCC Award Committee. Ralph Eshelman (left) accepted the award on behalf of Ross Holland who is ill.

Donald Terras stated the following in his presentation: “The name Ross Holland should be familiar to everyone here today. He dedicated the majority of his life to writing about and preserving America’s cultural landmarks through his long tenure with the National Park Service. But, he was perhaps best known for his work with maritime resources, most notably lighthouses. In fact, Ross is affectionately known as the “dean” of American lighthouse historians. But he was also at the forefront of laying the foundation for what has become the lighthouse preservation movement in this country. In recognition of his accomplishments, on behalf of the American Lighthouse Coordinating Committee, I am pleased to present this first Distinguished Service Award to Ross, an award that hereinafter will be called the F. Ross Holland Distinguished Service Award.”

In the future the F. Ross Holland Award, as it now will be called, will be presented by the American Lighthouse Coordinating Committee to individuals and groups for outstanding contributions to all or any one of the fields encompassing lighthouse preservation, education, history, publication and/or other forms of documentation.
