Bravo on Hendricks Head

We just wanted to say “Bravo” on the May article in Lighthouse Digest about Hendricks Head Lighthouse in Maine. Being from Kansas, we don’t have too many lighthouses around here, but we have been lucky enough to have vacationed in Maine a couple of years ago on our honeymoon. We saw the Hendricks Head Lighthouse from a shoreline nearby, but since it is on private property, the distance and fog obscured a really good view. What a thrill it was to open this month’s Lighthouse Digest and see a wonderful article and the photographs. Keep up the good work.

Lawn light from kit

Here is the photo of the lighthouse and keepers house that I built. It is one of three lighthouses that I made from the pattern that you list for sale item # 88534. I am not sure about it being a breeze to build, but is sure was fun. The lighthouse and keeper’s house sit high on the banks of Lake Erie in North Kingsville, OH. They sit about 700 feet from the edge of the lake, and although lit, it does not serve as an aid to navigation.

We really enjoy our monthly Lighthouse Digest and our stops at Lighthouse Depot in Wells on our way to summers at Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Love of Lights

As you can see by the enclosed photograph, I love lighthouses. I have every room decorated with lighthouses, and being an artist makes it easy. I really enjoy Lighthouse Digest magazine and can’t wait to get it each month. My primary interest is the northeast and Canada. Having seen about half of Maine’s lighthouses, I plan to see more.

Happy 10th Anniversary to

Lighthouse Digest

I had no idea until I saw the May issue that this was the 10th anniversary. Thank you for printing my article pf page 7 of that issue, “Some Transfers are Not Easy.” It was a stoke of genius to include the companion piece by Shirley Vanderbilt—two stories of the Carysfort Lighthouse side by side.

I also enjoyed the Happy Memories story by Jim Merkel. I particularly enjoyed his reference to conversations with Bob Mackreth, historian for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. I had some good conversations with him back when I did a story about the keeper of the Raspberry Island Lighthouse. Jim Merkel has been a very good contributor to Lighthouse Digest. So has Jeremy D’Entremont. They do some fine writing.

Browns Point—First-hand

I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the article (March 2002) about Browns Point Lighthouse, WA. The story was very informative but would have been more interesting coming from one who has stayed there. We were lighthouse keepers at Brown’s Point Lighthouse in July of 2001. It was the most rewarding trip ever. The scenery was beautiful. The stay was exciting and relaxing. Sitting on the porch watching the sunset every night and the huge ships going by daily.

The tours were fun and we met very nice and interesting people from all over. We went to a play in Tacoma as a community theater that was fantastic. We went allover Seattle and visited the Space Needle. The visit to Mt. Rainer was breathtaking and the whole experience was just unbelievable. The cottage at the lighthouse was everything you could ask for and is very comfortable. All the people in charge of the Historical Society were wonderful and so helpful. The whole stay was a one in a lifetime dream. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. We whole-heartedly encourage any one interested in lighthouses to make the trip and be a lighthouse for a week.
