Passing

Ruth Sargent-Schneider, 82, of Peaks Island, Maine, passed away this past September 20th. Most people in lighthouse circle knew her as Ruth Sexton Sargent, coauthor of the book, The Original Biography of Abbie Burgess, Lighthouse Heroine that she wrote with Dorothy Holder Jones. The book, which came out in 1969, was most recently published by Lighthouse Digest. She had an illustrious career having performed in two Broadway shows and even she even had a brief stint as a Rockette. She was a much sought after speaker and wrote for the Portland Press Herald and her stories appeared in numerous magazines. She was predeceased by three husbands. Ruth is also known for other books such as The Littlest Lighthouses, The Nautical Alphabet, The Island Merry-Go-Round, Tunnel Beneath the Sea, Island Living, Casco Bay Islands-Past and Present, and Mayflower’s Voyage to Freedom.

Friends visit Nubble

The volunteers who staff the gift shop at Maine’s Nubble Lighthouse got a rare opportunity to visit the lighthouse at the end of the tourist season. The famous lighthouse, which sits on an island, just a few feet off the mainland, is otherwise off limits to the public because of the dangerous landing and cliffs on the island. The visit was a real treat to everyone and served as a special thank you for their many hours of volunteering to raise money for the park and maintenance of the lighthouse.
