The American Lighthouse Foundation’s Museum of Lighthouse History in Wells, Maine got a new lens to display among its many rare lighthouse artifacts. The large lens, shown here, dates from 1882. The Barbier, Benard, & Turenne lens originally beamed from a lighthouse in Madagascar. When the lighthouse received a new lens this one was sold at auction to a maritime antiques dealer in South Africa. Later the dealer opened a store in San Diego and had the lens shipped to the United States to be put on display in his store where it remained for several years.
A move to a smaller store forced the dealer to offer the lens for sale and it was purchased by Lighthouse Depot and shipped to Maine where Lighthouse Depot employee Dave Rand supervised the reassembly of it. It is now on long-term loan to the American Lighthouse Foundation for display in the museum.
