The United States Postal Service has announced that five new lighthouse postage stamps will be among the new stamps being issue of 2003.
The series called Lighthouses of the Southeast will feature the following lighthouses: Tybee Island; GA; Old Cape Henry, VA; Cape Lookout, NC; Morris Island, SC; and Hillsboro Inlet, FL.
Previously issued lighthouse postage stamps from this series were the 25 cent Lighthouses of America in 1990 and the 32 cent Great Lakes Lighthouse postage stamps in 1995.
No date and location for the First Day of Issue ceremonies have yet been set, but they are expected to be release in June of 2003.
No word has come from the Postal Service yet on the application submitted, with thousands of signatures, by the American Lighthouse Foundation requesting a postage stamp to honor the United States Lighthouse Service which served from 1789 until 1939 when it was dissolved and merged into the U.S. Coast Guard. The nonprofit foundation had also requested a series of postage stamps honoring famous lighthouse keepers from each region of the country.
The new series of postage stamps will feature the artwork of Howard Koslow, who is the same artist that painted the previous sets of lighthouse postage stamps.
