Former Coast Guardsman Pete Jones took this photograph of Benjamin S. Hudak in 1972. Ben was the next-door neighbor of Pete’s in laws in Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Benjamin Hudak was the last lighthouse keeper of the LaPointe Lighthouse in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands. He served there as 2nd assistant keeper from June 1930 to Nov. 1930, 1st Assistant keeper from Nov. 1930 to April 1948 and keeper from 1948 until the lighthouse was automated in 1964. Born in 1896, he is now deceased.

Our thanks go out to Pete Jones for sending this photograph to us to help in our efforts to record, save and publish photographs of the keepers of yesteryear. If you have a photograph of a lighthouse keeper of yesteryear please send us a copy with as much information as possible about the person. It is vital to save as many lighthouse keeper photographs at one central location as possible for future generations. Send to Editor, Lighthouse Digest Magazine, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630.
