Michigan’s Big Sable Lighthouse has announced that beginning May 1, it will be open seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and will maintain those hours until October 31, when the station will close for the winter months.
Big Sable Lighthouse is located in Ludington State Park and a Michigan State Park motor vehicle permit is required to enter the park. To reach the lighthouse, visitors must hike the trail, which originates in the Pines Campground or walk north on the beach from the Ludington State Park Beach House. The roundtrip walking distance is 3 1/2 miles.
The lightstation maintains a gift shop with snacks in the former keeper’s house, and the tower is open for climbing for a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children 6-12.
For those who don’t want to make the walk, there are three dates this year that bus service will be available: June 12, July 24, and September 18. Cost of the round trip bus ride is $1.50 per person.
