Shown here are photographs of lighthouse keeper Arthur S. Almquist who served in the United States Lighthouse Service for over 30 years. He entered the United States Lighthouse Service in 1917 and served at various Great Lakes lighthouses including Racine North Breakwater Light, Little Point Sable, Indiana Harbor East Breakwater, Grand Haven Light, Port Washington and Calumet Harbor. The photo on the left was taken in 1918 while he was stationed at Racine North Breakwater Light in Wisconsin, and the photo on the right was taken in 1934 at Little Point Sable Light in Michigan.
We thank his daughter Mrs. Allen M. Tennant for sending these photographs to us. It is important that photographs of lighthouse keepers be recorded and included in a national database to be saved for the future. If you have any old photographs of lighthouse keepers, life at a lighthouse, or vintage photos of a lighthouse, please share them with us at P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630. No need to send originals; photographs can be duplicated by just about any photo shop or scanned and e-mailed as a JPEG file 300dpi or better to Editor@LighthouseDigest.com.
