Thanks to information supplied by Russ Rowlett, the Buck Island Lighthouse and Ham’s Bluff Lighthouse, both in the U.S. Virgin Islands, have been added to the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of endangered lighthouses.
Ownership of the Buck Island Lighthouse is in the process of being transferred to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and hopefully they will take the necessary steps to restore it. The lighthouse is located on Buck Island, about two miles off the western coast of St. Thomas, Virginia Islands near the port of Charlotte Amalie.
Originally built by the Danish government in 1915, the Ham’s Bluff Lighthouse is at the western end of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1981, the U.S. Coast Guard transferred all the property around the lighthouse to the U.S. Navy. This may well be the worst looking active lighthouse under Coast Guard ownership.
