March 4, 1776 – The Continental Congress resolves to disable Sandy Hook Lighthouse, New Jersey, to prevent it from being utilized by the enemy during the American Revolution.
March 16, 1818 – The first Macquarie Lighthouse near the entrance to the harbor of Sydney, Australia, is completed.
March 1840 – St. Catherine’s Lighthouse on the Isle of Wight in England is lighted for the first time.
March 10, 1863 – New Canal Light, Louisiana, is extinguished by order of General Sherman, commanding the defenses of New Orleans during the Civil War.
March 2, 1867 – The U.S. Congress authorizes $75,000 a new lighthouse at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
March 29, 1867 – The 1857 lighthouse at Timbalier Bay, Lousisiana, is destroyed by a hurricane.
March 1, 1877 – Stepping Stones Light in Long Island Sound, New York, is first lighted.
March 1880 – An argument between Keeper Frederick Osborne and Assistant Keeper John Stevens of St. Simons Light in Georgia ends with Osborne dead from a gunshot wound.
March 23, 1891 – The old Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, California, is extinguished, and a new light, closer to the water at the tip of the point, goes into service.
March 1, 1902 – The first staffed light stations in Alaska are established at Southeast Five Finger Island and Sentinel Island.
March 4, 1925 – An act of Congress, for the first time, provides for disability retirement in the Lighthouse Service.
March 15, 1976 – The keeper’s house at Faulkner’s Island Light Station in Connecticut is destroyed by an accidental fire.
March 29, 1984 – A blizzard topples the 1818 Great Point Lighthouse at the northern tip of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.
March 1, 2003 - Administrative control of the Coast Guard is transferred to the newly created Department of Homeland Security from the Department of Transportation.
