Noted lighthouse author and historian Jeremy D’Entremont, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has announced the founding of “New England Lighthouses Tours,” that he hopes will create a new and exciting public awareness of lighthouses, while providing fun and entertainment for people of all ages.
From now until early October D’Entremont’s “New England Lighthouse Tours,” will be offering two narrated tours every week, leaving from downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in a luxury motor coach. Every Thursday’s all-day “Lighthouses of Portsmouth & Portland” tour will include a visit inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, followed by a drive to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where participants will visit the famous Portland Head Light and its museum, along with two other lighthouses in South Portland. On the way back to Portsmouth, the tour will stop for shopping at Lighthouse Depot in Wells, the ‘World’s Largest Lighthouse Gift Store, followed by a visit to the scenic Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light in York, Maine
Every Friday, there will be a five-hour local tour called “Seacoast Lights and Portsmouth Harbor by Land & Sea.” This tour includes a visit inside Portsmouth Harbor Light, followed by a harbor cruise around Portsmouth Harbor aboard the M/V Heritage. Included in the cruise is a close-up look at Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery. Following the cruise, the tour will head to the Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light in York, Maine.
D’Entremont sees the tour business as a way to reach new audiences. “I expect that the majority of people taking the tours will be tourists, “ he says, “but I also hope that many local people will take part. These trips are a fun experience for the whole family.” A portion of the proceeds from all the tours will go to lighthouse preservation. “Donations for preservation are hard to come by these days,” D’Entremont says. “These tours will provide a way for people to have fun and donate to a good cause, all at the same time.”
Jeremy D’Entremont of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is known to many readers of Lighthouse Digest Magazine as the author of hundreds of articles on lighthouse history and preservation, along with several books. He’s also the founder and co-chairman of the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, and the first vice president of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
