Shown here from a very early 1900's photograph believed to have been taken at the Tompkinsville Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island in New York are the lightships LV92, LV93, LV87.

The LV92 and LV93 eventually made a trip with a convoy of lighthouse tenders to the Pacific coast where they would serve.

Lightships were basically floating lighthouses and were stationed at locations where it was too expensive or too dangerous to built a lighthouse. Lightships are no longer used having been replaced by buoys.

This story appeared in the July 2008 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine.
