The 19-member commission of Battleship Park in Mobile, Alabama has voted unanimously to accept a proposal of the Alabama Lighthouse Association to move the battered Mobile Middle Bay Lighthouse to the park.
However, the park, still deeply in debt from clean-up of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, is in no position to help financially.
The Middle Bay Light Centennial restored the 1905 Mobile Middle Bay Lighthouse in 1984 and another renovation took place in 2002-03.
Most people now agree that the only way the lighthouse can be saved is to move it to land and they hope to secure the funding through grants and donations. However, the plan must still meet with the approval of the Alabama Historical Commission.
