Built on Eugene Island in 1916, where the dredged channel to the Atchafalaya River cut through Point Au Fer Reef (originally known as Point DeFer) was the well-suited and architecturally aesthetic Point Au Fer Lighthouse. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1975 and was subsequently destroyed and seems to have been forgotten about.
