Abandoned since the early 1950s, Louisiana's Sabine Pass Lighthouse was staffed again this past September but they weren't supposed to be staffing the lighthouse.
It seems two men decided to take a boat out to the lighthouse and climb to the top of the tower. However, the ladder that leads to the top of the tower broke when they attempted to descend.
One of the men had a cell phone and called for help. Firefighters could only get a truck so far down the road toward the lighthouse. Then they had to swim across a ditch that was filled with water. The rescue workers were able to get a rope with a harness up to the men who were then safely brought down the tower.
The local sheriff's department, which was on the scene, said the men were issued citations for trespassing and property damage. One person commented that the men should have been left in the tower overnight with the mosquitoes to teach them a lesson.
The lighthouse is now owned by the Cameron Preservation Alliance and there are plans to eventually restore the lighthouse.
