This vintage post card shows what Maine’s Goat ...

The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust wants to bring Goat Island Lighthouse in Cape Porpoise, Maine back to the way it originally looked in the 1950s.

Although the group has done an excellent job of maintaining and caring for the lighthouse since they took it over, they now want it to look the way it used to, outside as well as indoors.

But first they need approval from various government entities, something they expect to receive.

Currently the old keeper’s house is a mishmash of styles that came about over the years when the Coast Guard maintained the house and bringing it back to the way it was originally would be of historical significance to better interpret lighthouse life to future generations. The group has lots of old photos to work from.

They also want to rebuild the old enclosed walkway that once went from the keeper’s house to the tower. Another major project would be the rebuilding of the old pyramid fog bell tower that once stood at the site. If approved, and once the money is raised, the project is expected to take five years to complete.
