Lighthouse Digest is continually looking for historic images of lighthouses. These images will be scanned and saved in archival files for future generations and used to help us tell and preserve the history of lighthouses in future issues of Lighthouse Digest. Naturally we are looking for photographs of the lighthouse employees and family members that lived at the lighthouses, lighthouse depots and other lighthouse related sites. It is important to remember that as the old saying goes, “A photograph is worth a thousand words.” So, if you can help us in any way, please write to us at Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630 or e-mail Editor@LighthouseDigest.com.

This aerial view of Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, recently sent to us, was taken in the winter of 1946 shortly after the conclusion of World War II. In the background can be seen many of the barracks of Fort Williams. Fort Williams was established in the late 1800s as a sub-post of nearby Fort Preble and officially became Fort Williams in 1899. In World War II it was the headquarters for the defense of Portland Harbor. Many of the buildings shown in this photograph no longer stand. The site of the fort and where the lighthouse stands is now known as Fort Williams Park and is owned and operated by the people of Cape Elizabeth.

If you are interested in learning more, the book Portland Head Light has more historical information and historic and rare photos than any other book published about the lighthouse, the fort, and the area lighthouses.

This story appeared in the December 2009 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine.
