The nonprofit Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy is the new owner of the two lighthouses in Muskegon, Michigan. Ownership of the lighthouses was transferred to the group by the General Services Administration under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.
Jeff Shook, president of the nonprofit group, in calling this a new beginning for the lighthouses, hopes that at some point the south breakwater tower can be opened to the public but it will take approximately $250,000 to first restore the tower. Shook said he hopes that he will be able to form a partnership of sorts with some local groups to accomplish that goal.
