The daughter of a lighthouse keeper, Lee grew up along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, with her family occupying different lighthouse stations in Oregon and the San Juan Islands of Washington.
“Often keepers risked their lives to save victims of the sea,” recalls Lee. In one tale, she describes the moment that made her see keepers like her father as heroes. “A winter storm was brewing as they watched a Foss Tug pulling a heavy raft of logs into the northern currents of the point,” Lee explains. “The tug swamped so quickly there wasn’t any time for any safety measures. The crew’s first cries for help were heard by Wyman and Pete, who threw blankets into the row boat, unhesitatingly heading to the rescue.”
