Virginia’s New Point Comfort Lighthouse has received a grant of $424,000 that will be added to a previous grant of $149,500 and local county money of $144,200. The money will be used to solicit bids to stabilize the island that the lighthouse sits on by building a massive brick wall.

New Point Comfort Lighthouse was built in the ...

The lighthouse, built in 1805, is one of the oldest standing towers in America and has had its share of problems almost from the day it was built. But the tenacious structure has survived war and hurricanes and storms that have eroded away at the slice of land it sits on in the midst of rising water.

The project will include building a 300 foot wall of boulders and stone around the island that will be an amazing 46 feet wide and 12 feet above the mean low water mark, which is about four feet higher than the island. The work is expected to take place in 2011.

In the meantime the New Point Comfort Preservation Task Force is raising additional funds for the long term care of the historic lighthouse.

Seeking the funds to save the New Point Comfort Lighthouse has been a long slow process and the Preservation Task Force is to be commended for their years of dedicated efforts to save this historic lighthouse.
