Lighthouse keeper John C. Belden was one of the lighthouse keepers recently honored on a plaque placed at Tibbetts Point Lighthouse in New York where he served as an assistant keeper in the early 1900s. After Tibbetts Point Lighthouse he served for four years at Sunken Rock Lighthouse, also in New York.
In June of 1912 he was appointed the keeper of Rock Island Lighthouse in New York where he served until his retirement in 1940, serving longer than any other keeper at the lighthouse. Rock Island Lighthouse, is currently undergoing restoration and is expected to open to the public in 2012. Belden would be proud.
