Plaque at Point Abino

The Canadian government has placed a commemorative plaque at Point Abino Lighthouse that recently underwent a $1.5 million restoration. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is only accessible by private road and has very limited public access. At the ceremony, Niagara Falls MP Rob Nicholson said the lighthouse is the most aesthetically pleasing lighthouse in all of Canada. We are sure there are many people who would disagree with that statement. (Photo by Sarah Burke).

New Owner in Vermilion

Ownership of the replica of the 1877 Vermilion Lighthouse in Vermilion, Ohio will be transferred to the city from the Inland Seas Maritime Museum, which had previously owned the lighthouse. The Inland Seas Museum has closed to move to the National Great Lakes Maritime Museum in Toledo, Ohio. Seaside Cinema

The folks at Port Isabel Lighthouse in Texas have come up with a clever way to draw attention to their lighthouse. Since 2005, using the lighthouse tower as a movie screen, they showed outdoor movies at night that were projected onto the tower. What they call The Lighthouse Establishment draws about 500 people per show bringing picnic baskets to watch the movies while relaxing on blankets and lawn chairs. Why haven’t we heard about this before? How did we miss it? Why aren’t other lighthouses doing this? (Photo courtesy Lighthouse Service Cinema Project)

The Eight Mile Swim

Our congratulations to Larry Herlth, known as Lighthouse Larry, for his eight mile round trip swim to Florida’s Alligator Reef Lighthouse. The swim took the 52-year old five hours and eleven minutes to complete. Larry is known for his detailed scale model metal reproductions of lighthouses of the Florida Keys and his passion for saving the lighthouses. (Photo by Don Summerville)

Battle of Cape Mendocino Is Over

The battle is over as to what will happen to the historic Fresnel lens that once stood in California’s Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. The lens that had been on display in a replica lighthouse at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, has been removed and placed in storage where it will remain for as long as four years while the city raises the money and renovates the Ferndale Museum so that it can display the lens in a climate controlled environment.

Remembering Lorinda White

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of former Lighthouse Digest employee, Lorinda White, (Lorinda Graham) who died unexpectedly at the age of 51. Although it has been a number of years since Lorinda worked for us, and we had lost touch with her, we remember her as hard working, fun loving person, who always enjoyed her job and was a pleasure to work with. We were saddened to hear of her death at such a young age. She is survived by two adult sons and her mother.
