New Jersey has a number of lighthouses that tower above some of its other beacons in popularity, but it’s been well known for many years that New Jersey has some very passionate lighthouse aficionados, something that you will find evident in the pages of this well written book that is loaded with historic black and white photos and informative text.

Sea Girt Lighthouse – The Community Beacon starts out with the typical background information to teach the novice about the general history of lighthouses and those in New Jersey, but quickly goes into the history of the Sea Girt Lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers who served there, and the transitional years of the lighthouse to its current status today. The book tells of the many colorful characters who served as its keepers, including a Civil War soldier, a pioneering woman, and even an inventor.

One chapter tells the story of something that every lighthouse historian dreams about - the uncovering of buried treasure found during the restoration of the lighthouse that included boxes of rare documents from the days of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and the early days of the U.S. Coast Guard. When the news of the discovery got out, it created a new and exciting interest in the lighthouse that brought forward additional artifacts.

All in all, this is my type of book, one that uses plenty of historical images along with a selection of color photographs to help give the reader a visual image of what they are reading about.

Sea Girt Lighthouse, The Community Beacon by Bill Dunn is a soft cover book with 190 pages. It is available as Item #2155 for $21.99 plus shipping from Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630, on-line at www.LighthouseDigest.com, or by calling 207-259-2121.
